The American Dream: Or Was That Just a Movie?
The American Dream: Or Was That Just a Movie? is a mixed-media photographic project examining the gap between the American Dream imagined through cinema and the lived experiences of immigrants in the United States. Drawing from Tsao’s own experience of moving from Taiwan to the U.S., the series uses staged self-portraiture to reconstruct familiar cinematic ideals of love, freedom, and success. Behind these carefully constructed scenes lies a growing awareness of economic uncertainty, social isolation, and the everyday realities that complicate the promise of a better life. By placing theatrical images alongside the emotional and material tensions of immigrant experience, the project asks how cinema shapes our expectations of America—and what happens when the dream meets reality.
Beneath the Grid
Beneath the Grid is a conceptual documentary photography project examining the tension between renewable energy development and the communities whose lives and livelihoods are shaped by it. Photographed on the Tibetan Plateau, the series documents large-scale photovoltaic power stations constructed across traditional grazing lands, where industrial energy infrastructures coexist with pastoral life. Drawing on Tsao’s long-term relationship with local Tibetan herders, the project combines ground-based and aerial perspectives to explore the contrast between monumental energy systems and everyday human presence. Through a stark black-and-white visual language, Beneath the Grid reflects on the social and environmental complexities behind the global pursuit of clean energy and asks who bears the costs of ecological progress.
