Tse-Wen Tsao
Tse-Wen Tsao is a Taiwanese visual artist working with photography and cinematic image-making. Her practice explores how what we see is shaped by what remains unseen—economic systems, technological infrastructures, and cultural narratives that structure visibility, value, and belonging.
Working with aerial photography, alternative process, and constructed imagery, she moves between documentary and fiction to examine how images do not simply reflect reality, but actively participate in its production.
Growing up in Taiwan within proximity to the semiconductor industry, Tsao developed an early awareness of how technological systems are embedded in everyday life while remaining largely invisible. This proximity informs her ongoing interest in the social, ecological, and political dimensions of infrastructure, particularly how large-scale systems of production reshape landscapes and lived experience.
Tsao holds a BFA in Cinematography from the Communication University of China and an MFA in Photography from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Her work has been exhibited in Baltimore at venues including Gormley Gallery and The Crow’s Nest Gallery, and featured in publications such as BmoreArt and VoyageBaltimore. She is a member of the American Society of Media Photographers and the Society for Photographic Education.
