Islet of the Prairie
Islet of the Prairie is a documentary photography series made between 2023 and 2025 during my repeated stays on the Tibetan Plateau. After unexpectedly settling in the region during the pandemic, I began living alongside local Tibetan communities and returning over the following years. The title describes the Tibetan towns I encountered as islands scattered across the vast grasslands—physically distant from one another and shaped by a culture that often feels like its own world. I photograph people in relation to the landscapes they inhabit: pastoral families, animals, temples, streets, and small towns embedded within the plateau. More than documenting a particular place, the series reflects my experience of entering a way of life deeply connected to the land and removed from the rhythms of modern society. It records a period in which I felt an unusual sense of belonging and harmony with my surroundings, an experience that continues to shape how I understand place, life, and home.
The Chinese People in the Streets and Lanes
The Chinese People in the Streets and Lanes is a documentary photography series made across China between 2020 and 2025, spanning Beijing, Northeast China, Inner Mongolia, Chongqing, Sichuan, Hainan, Fujian, Yunnan, Gansu, and other regions where I traveled and lived. With no predetermined subject or narrative, I photographed people and everyday encounters that caught my attention, often observing individuals in relation to the streets, neighborhoods, and environments they inhabited. Made across five years, including three years during the COVID-19 pandemic, the series unintentionally records a particular period of Chinese everyday life. Looking back at these photographs today, I also see them as a record of how I once looked at the world—with curiosity and a sensitivity to ordinary moments that I now find myself searching for again.
