China’s rapid expansion of large-scale solar power in its western provinces has brought both opportunity and disruption. For Tibetan pastoral families, the construction of vast photovoltaic stations often means losing the grazing lands that sustain their herds. While some view government compensation as a chance to relocate or invest, others face deep uncertainty—forced to rent land or risk slipping into poverty. Beyond economics, many worry about the irreversible damage to fragile grasslands, revealing the complex human and environmental costs hidden within the promise of “green” energy. This photography series explores the tension between development, environmental protection, and human life. It documents the massive solar power stations rising from the grasslands where Tibetan herders have lived for generations. Rendered in black and white, the images emphasize stark contrasts: the rigid geometry of solar panels etched like cracks across the vast plateau, set against the fragility of traditional pastoral life. For local communities, these structures arrive without choice, reshaping not only their land but also their future.
